Join Salt River Project and Scottsdale Public Art in the first fish roundup at Scottsdale Waterfront since its construction. Come out and enjoy permanent and temporary public art, meet Dewey the Waterdrop SRP’s water safety mascot, and learn more about the canals from experts and educational displays. Watch SRP crews herd the white amur fish, employed by SRP as natural canal cleaners, in preparation for draining the canal for routine inspection and repairs.

Art installations include Flowing Overlapping Gesture and Transfix.

Flowing Overlapping Gesture is a 100-foot-long artwork designed specifically for the canal by Phoenix painter Fausto Fernandez. Beginning 8:00 am on January 9th, crews will spend 3 days installing the artwork at the Marshall Way Bridge. The artwork will be on display while the canal is dry. Once the canal is refilled, the artwork will float in the canal for 3 days.

Transfix at Sunset Point

Transfix is a collaborative , interactive urban intervention that will be performed by 20 performers on January 9th from 8:00 – 10:00 am. Wearing white and weaving in and around the urban architectural spaces of Scottsdale Waterfront, Rachel Bowditch’s Vessel will transform the canal into a stage, revealing the poetry and beauty of the mundane. Performers break out of the traditional theatre arena into a public space where the audience becomes part of the performance, coming and going as they please and often intermingling with the
performers.

Bring your family and friends down to the Scottsdale Waterfront and explore why the canal is critical and why canal maintenance is so important to Scottsdale.

Every man’s bar buddy, George Wendt, aka “Norm,” will grace a barstool at The Big Pour, Sat., Nov. 14, at Scottsdale Waterfront. George graciously accepted the invitation to visit fans, sign his new book Drinking With George, participate in a beer seminar and hoist a few in the process.

Scottsdale Fashion Week Schedule Announced

The evenings of November 6 and 7 will be alive with over two-dozen runway shows. The Main Runway will be located on the Scottsdale Waterfront at Scottsdale and Camelback Roads. This New York style tented fashion show will showcase leading fashion designers and tastemakers on an 80-foot runway. Coinciding with the In-Tent shows, an outdoor runway under the stars across the Arizona canal at Southbridge will feature up-and-coming designers. Scottsdale Fashion Week kicks off in high gear Nov. 5 with the Milan-inspired Wearable ArtWalk through the Scottsdale Arts District where models prowl the streets in notable one-of-a-kind pieces of ‘art to wear’ clothing and jewelry. The event features local, national and international designers and runs through Nov. 7 with runway shows taking place at the Scottsdale Waterfront and SouthBridge districts. Scottsdale Fashion Week features an 80-foot tented runway that will showcase a selection of leading designers and an outdoor catwalk under the Sonoran Desert stars highlighting up-and-coming tastemakers. As a follow up to Mitchell’s post about the Beautiful Light show, I wanted to provide some media that captured the event. Josh Simons captured this shot on Saturday night. Notice how far away the shot was taken, but yet how bright it still was (click on the image to see a larger version).

This video, captured by YouTube user srsghost, was taken just to the right of SouthBridge. The music playing during the show was very ominous and enhanced the feel of the performance. Also, note the performers dressed in white on the bridge. Their job was to flip the switches that changed the displays. Standing over water with that much electricity in front of and above you would be pretty nerve racking.

The 2008 Frys.com Open

The Frys.com Open is a PGA TOUR Fall Series event October 22-26, 2008 where spectators can get up-close and personal with the players. Held in late October at the intimate Grayhawk Golf Club venue, the Frys.com Open attracts the PGA TOUR’s best golfers to Scottsdale in an incredible setting for world-class entertainment and amazing competition. Scottsdale Fashion Week

Buy a Pink Lightbulb to Support Breast Cancer

From now until October 31st, the Canal Bridge, which links the Scottsdale Waterfront to the Southbridge district, will be a light in pink. The light bulbs are purchased to support women who are dealing with breast cancer and to promote October as Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Light bulbs can be purchased for $20. A special tribute card will be sent out to a person you choose to honor. There will be a lighting ceremony October 3rd at 7:00 pm.

Explore Your Artistic Side with New Exhibits

Since its inception in 1985, the Scottsdale Public Art Program has worked to bring new and creative artwork to the streets. The downtown area will soon be home to three new interactive exhibits that will allow visitors to take part in Scottsdale’s unique arts community.

Art lovers can enjoy beautiful fall evenings by taking a stroll downtown and experiencing a stunning light show at the Scottsdale Waterfront. Beginning in October, the collection’s new Night Lights exhibit, a premier music and interactive, light-based art installation, will be on display. Launching the attraction will be Tucson artist Mary Lucking whose light installation will grace the Waterfront every third Thursday from October through December, using the water of the nearby Arizona Canal as a canvas. Visitors can give the light show their own artistic touch by speaking into a microphone set up at the exhibit, which then triggers and changes the patterns projected onto the water.

A second all-new piece, Bell’e Art, will transform the bell tower adjacent to the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts into an outdoor gallery. The first exhibition, on view Sept. 8 through Dec. 3, will feature New York-based artist Béatrice Coron’s series of papercuts inspired by Scottsdale landmarks, lifestyle, history and more. Coron’s piece will feature 24 iconic Scottsdale scenes hand cut on black and white Tyvek, a lightweight waterproof paper, suspended from the top of the tower. Each cutout image will serve as a window that invites passersby to peek through, invoking memories and dreams of Scottsdale and the Southwest. Visitors inspired by Coron’s piece will have the chance to create their own works of art when she hosts a workshop, Sharp Arts: The International Papercutting Scene, at the Scottsdale Civic Center Library on Nov. 1.

Crocheters get out your hooks and take part in Scottsdale Public Art’s crocheted exhibit at the Civic Center Library. In April 2009, the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project, a globally touring exhibit of a crocheted coral reef ecosystem, will be on display at the library before heading to its next stop at the Smithsonian. The 2,000-square-foot reef has already made its rounds from London to Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. Visitors eager to learn the art of crocheting can take part in organized workshops.
